Any Jays fans out there? There’s been some excit

Any Jays fans out there? There’s been some exciting buzz around @shoheiohtani possibly joining Canada’s baseball team the Toronto @bluejays which would be absolutely huge. If you don’t know, he’s a tremendous athlete who is both phenomenal at pitching and batting - a rarity in baseball for one single player.

It’s still up in the air what his decision will be but he would have the support and fandom of this entire country behind him if he chose our team. 😄

I just finished this painting called “The Way Forward” which is part of my Daylight Dreamers collection and is now available in my shop.

Fun Fact: Today is my name day! In the Greek cultu

Fun Fact: Today is my name day! In the Greek culture people used to celebrate their name day with more importance than their actual birthdays. While this is still practiced today more modern Greeks will celebrate their birthdays as well.

The tradition comes from the Orthodox religion recognizing days of feast for certain patron saints. So today is Saint Barbara day! While I don’t consider myself overly religious I have come to appreciate this part of my culture and heritage.

It wasn’t uncommon back in the day for some people to not even really know when their birthday was since it wasn’t held with much significance. My grandmother on my Dad’s side was one of those people.

To be honest I’ve never really liked my name. 😂 It’s super old school, very few people my age have this name and if I’m in a loud setting I often have to introduce myself more than once.

We didn’t celebrate my name day growing up since being first generation Canadian we obviously focused on our birthdays more. However, I like the idea of getting sort of a second “birthday” that I get to have with everyone who also shares this name.

This piece I’m sharing is a self portrait that I did a couple of years ago in coloured pencil and PanPastel. It’s called “Still & Becoming.”

Sending a big THANK YOU to everyone who ordered Christmas ornaments from me in the last couple of months. It was a new thing I wanted to try out this year and it seemed to go over really well! 😄

Handmade ornaments have a special place in my heart. My mom used to make them when I was a kid out of recycled objects like tuna cans and toilet paper tubes. (See my stories) My sister also used to hand craft out gift tags to also double as Christmas ornaments. I decided to join the family tradition this year and make my own ornaments!

Let’s face it, most artists aren’t born knowing how to run a business. There are a million things we are responsible for trying to accomplish in a day outside of just making great art. These books will change the way the way you think about and run your art business. Here are some of my faves to get you started:

1. Two weeks Notice By Amy Porterfield - Amy breaks down everything you need to know from transitioning from a full time job to pursuing your passion in an easy to follow and digest way. @amyporterfield  
2. Find Your Artistic Voice by Lisa Congdon - Lisa is an absolute inspiration and so are the other artists that she interviews in the book giving priceless advice and insights for any creative journey @lisacongdon 
3. Artpreneur by Miriam Schulman - Miriam gives you a no-nonsense approach from everything to pricing, productivity and promoting your artwork. She also has a great podcast called the Inspiration Place. @schulmanart 
4. The Creative Business Handbook by Ekaterina Popover and Alicia Puig - Sage advice and inspiration from artists who have lived the ups and downs of a creative career and give you the roadmap to making your own successful path. @theartqueens 
5. The Graphic Artist’s Guild Handbook for Pricing & Ethical Guidelines - This is an absolute MUST OWN for any artist involved in doing commercial work. It includes pricing guidelines, contract templates and everything you need to know about the graphic arts industry. 
6. What They Don’t Teach In Art School by Will Terry - A successful illustrator’s real world advice and best practices to making it in the business of commercial illustration. @willterryart 
7. Money Making Methods for Artists by Barb Sotiropoulos - Ok, ok this is a shameless plug for my own book here BUT if you want a way to learn 40 different ways you can started making money as an artist with the pros and cons of each – this book covers that! It’s currently available as a digital ebook but I will be making the print version available early next year. Visit my bio for the link to it.
