How to Pick Your Coloured Pencils

March 28, 2022June 19, 20225 Comments

Choosing the right pencil for you can be a difficult and sometimes overwhelming task. With so many brands and lines within those brands, it can seem impossible to choose. Add to that the vast range in price points and varying opinions amongst artists using the medium, it's all a recipe for major confusion. Finding the … Continue reading How to Pick Your Coloured Pencils

CPM Lighthouse Workshop

July 4, 20212 Comments

Landscape art can be surprisingly intimidating! That was my first thought when I was invited back this year as a guest Workshop Instructor for the July Issue of COLORED PENCIL Magazine. I'm pretty confident with my skills as an artist and with the colored pencil medium, so I figured if I felt that way, others … Continue reading CPM Lighthouse Workshop

Why I Create Colour Charts

June 3, 2021November 11, 20212 Comments

Colour charts are an important tool that I use in my art practice. For many, this can be a seemingly pointless or cumbersome task but I find that it's extremely helpful to me for a number of reasons. For those of you who aren't seasoned color-charting veterans, I'm going to share with you how I … Continue reading Why I Create Colour Charts

Derwent Metallic Review

June 18, 2020December 30, 20201 Comment

Derwent is fast becoming a popular choice amongst artists working in the colored pencil medium. With a history dating back to 1832 in Britain though they are not by any means new to the scene. The pencils are still manufactured in the UK today and with a very apparent and genuine commitment to hearing the … Continue reading Derwent Metallic Review

Prismacolor Premier Sharpener Review

February 11, 2018June 11, 20213 Comments

I don't know about you, but I'm constantly on the hunt for a great pencil sharpener. Whether it be hand-held, electric or battery operated doesn't really matter because at the end of the day they just need to do one thing well for me – sharpen my colored pencils. Back in November of last year, … Continue reading Prismacolor Premier Sharpener Review

Faber-Castell Trio Sharpening Box Review

March 1, 2016December 30, 2020Leave a comment

This month's My Fave Monday post is on the Faber-Castell Trio Sharpening Box. I've had this pencil sharpener for about a year now and it's been my go to manual pencil sharpener when I'm working in colored pencil. In general, I'm a pretty big fan of Faber-Castell's products, so when I came across this sharpener … Continue reading Faber-Castell Trio Sharpening Box Review

One of the things that tends to stop some artists from creating is feeling like they need to create a large elaborate piece. The sheer time required to do that can be intimidating enough so instead, they end up creating nothing at all. Getting feedback from my customers on their custom portraits always makes my day. Here is a recent one I did of my pup’s brother Fuji. Swipe to see what my client had to say about their piece.❤️ In case you missed my reel from the other day here is the finished portrait I did of my dog @camaro_theshiba 🥰 Settling back into a regular routine after a vacation is always a challenge. Thankfully it was a short week but it’s felt like an even shorter weekend! It’s been a very busy May working on a bunch of projects in the works. Unfortunately, that also meant not having a lot of time to create art. A little sketchbook mixed media piece I did the other day. ☺️ The weather is finally turning around and the grass is getting greener. What do you like most about spring? Some days you wake up inspired to draw. Today I decided to create this piece of my dog @camaro_theshiba from a photo I took a few months ago. The light was perfect and the snow sprinkles on his face just made the whole scene feel magical. ❄️ Something about drawing and painting oranges makes me think of summer. 😊 I don’t know about you but I’m ready for warmer weather. 🍊☀️ Just a little skull in a sketchbook. 🙂💀 I wanted to explore using different colours on a coloured background to study value and shape. This sketchbook is roughly 8x8 and is the perfect size for me to do a decent sized exploration without feeling too overwhelmed by the size.
