Grumbacher Academy Acrylic Paint Review

Happy Monday! Today’s My Fave Monday Art Supply Post is about Grumbacher Academy Acrylic paints.

When I was in high school, I was fortunate enough to win a scholarship award from my city’s Allied Arts Council. Part of the prize was a beautiful wooden box full of a starter set of Grumbacher oil paints and brushes. I had never tried oil painting up until that point but the materials were so great it made me really fall in love with painting again.

While I currently don’t paint with oils for a variety of reasons, I always remembered that company’s name and found it to be synonymous with a good quality. After college when I started painting a lot more with acrylics I came across their Academy line at one of my local art stores. I purchased a starter set at a great price point and immediately loved the texture and vibrancy of the colours. They also provided a wide array of hues which was great for when I needed a lot of one specific colour. Sometimes I use other brands for my base colours for paintings, but I find I always come back to Grumbacher for the majority of a piece. The paint works great when it needs to be applied more heavily but also waters down well for glazing effects.

The only real problem I have had with this product is that at some point the top of the lids seemed to crack and separate which would obviously cause issues with the paint in the tube being exposed to air. This seems to have been fixed in the newer versions of the product, though. To be completely fair, I also experienced this with another high profile company’s paint tubes.

Overall if you are looking for a beginner to intermediate acrylic paint at a great price point with a variety of hues, Grumbacher Academy Acrylics are a solid option.
