The Crossroads of Should and Must Book Review

This month’s Artist Inspiration feature is on artist Elle Luna’s book The Crossroads of Should and Must: Find and Follow Your Passion. Her book explores her story of how she changed her life and followed a calling to become the artist she knew was living inside of her. It’s a inspirational read for anyone who is on their own journey to discover what their passion is in life and how to make that passion an everyday reality.

I first came across Elle Luna watching her talk from the 2015 Adobe MAX conference. I listened to her presentation with great interest as she spoke about her story accompanied by her beautiful illustrations which also adorn the book. The thing I found interesting about her story, is that she was very successful in the field she was working in and yet still found that deep inside of her something was missing. She expresses this well in her quote “All too often, we feel that we are not living the fullness of our lives because we are not expressing the fullness of our gifts.”

In my opinion this is a must read for anyone who is struggling with what they feel they should do in life and what something inside of them is telling them they must do. She details how she transitioned to being a full-time artist, including the sacrifices she made and tips on how to get there yourself. One thing I really like about her book is that she doesn’t suggest that following your passion means you have to full on quit your day job, for a lot of people that is not necessarily an option. What she does discuss, is how it is important to honour your passion by following it in some way even if it’s on a part-time basis.

Although I read this less than 200 page book in one sitting, it is one that I will most likely go back to often for days when I feel like I’m not sure how I can to make the things I dream of a reality. In light of not spoiling too much of what is in the book, I’ve kept this review brief. If her words speak to you as they did to me though, you will enjoy the experience of reading it. Coming across her thoughts on this subject has inspired and invigorated me to keep working towards the things I dream of one day doing.
